Pear OS 8, Linux dengan rasa MacOS X

Desain baru di Pear OS 8 (sekarang masih versi Beta) ini semakin kental dengan rasa MacOS X. Dulu kita harus bersusah payah untuk mendapatkan tampilan MacOS di Linux beragam paket seperti Mac4Lin kita install manual. Nah, bagi kawan-kawan yang suka dengan tampilan MacOS X, mungkin Pear OS 8 ini cocok buat anda. Saya juga berharap bahwa Pear OS ini akan merubah perspektif orang terhadap Linux. Linux tidak lagi susah, Linux tidak lagi old fashioned.

Desain Pear OS 8 ini berubah cukup radikal dibanding dengan versi sebelumnya Pear OS 7. Tampilan Pear OS 8 terasa lebih lembut, icon-icon juga didesain lebih halus serta lebih nyaman digunakan.

Open Terminal and type

Once finished, run it and specify the folder where you store your music.

I just installed the new Pear OS 8 Beta 1 on my Virtualbox and its amazed me. New redesigned theme, color and some other new applications really can turn the ordinary people thought about Linux. I started with Musique. Musique is a super cool multimedia player that is the default audio player on Pear OS 8.

Musique is available for Windows, Linux and Mac. Its a good idea for the Pear OS developer to include Musique on Pear OS 8. It has a simple user interface and looks like the new iTunes.

XBMC is my favorite multimedia application on Linux. It has many interesting features and has a cool interface. XBMC can be installed on most Linux distributions including Linux Mint 15. This tutorial is going to show how to install XBMC on Linux Mint 15 Olivia.

Open Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install xbmc

The command will let Linux Mint 15 to download the packages from the internet. After that it will automatically install xbmc on the system. Once finished, you can start using XBMC on Linux Mint 15

Add new shared folder on OpenMediaVault Server

This tutorial will show you how to create a new shared folder on OpenMediaVault (OMV) server. It is recommended to add another disk to the server. Do not put the data in the same disk with the system. Read my previous tutorial on how to add new disk on OpenMediaVault server.

First, check if the new disk is well formatted and mounted. Go to Storage | Filesystems and make sure the new disk is listed there and the status is online. Press Mount button to mount the disk automatically.

 

How to create new disk filesystem on OpenVaultMedia server

This tutorial is going to show you how to add new disk and create new filesystem on OpenMediaVault (OVM) server. OVM is a powerful Network Attached Storage (NAS) which can be installed on a flash disk. The user’s data should be placed on different disk for security reason.

To create filesystem on OVM, make sure the new disk is recognize by the server. You can check the new disk from the physical disk menu on the storage section. See the image below for illustration.

How to change the web administrator password on OpenMediaVault

On my previous tutorial, I've shown how to install OpenMediaVault server. After the installation process is finished, we can log in to the server's web administration interface to further manage the server.

To log in to OpenMediaVault web administration page simply type the IP address of the server on your favorite browser such as Google Chrome, Firefox. The default username is admin and password is openmediavault.

How to install X2Go Server on Linux Mint 15

X2Go is my favorite remote desktop application. Now I want to show how to install the X2go server on Linux Mint 15. After this tutorial we can connect to Linux Mint 15 from Windows or Linux desktop easily.

Steps to install X2go server on Linux Mint 15

1. Install ssh server on Linux Mint 15

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

2. Open Terminal and type this command to install python software properties

sudo apt-get install python-software-properties

3. Add the X2go repository and install X2go server

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:x2go/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install x2goserver

4. Since X2go client does not support Cinnamon or Mate desktop, we need to install Gnome classic desktop on Linux Mint 15

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

5. Connect to Linux Mint 15 using X2go client.

How to upgrade to Proxmox 3.1

The new version of Proxmox 3.1 has been released. If you have the existing Proxmox installation, you can easily upgrade to this Proxmox 3.1 easily. You will need a good internet connection because this upgrade will download about 90 MB files from the net. The good thing when we upgrade to Proxmox 3.1 is that the settings and VM's will not changed.

How to upgrade to Proxmox 3.1 via command line

First, login to Proxmox server. I use putty to connect to my Proxmox console from a Windows machine

Then, open the file /etc/apt/sources.list. This file must contains at least these three items.

deb http://http.at.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib
deb http://download.proxmox.com/debian wheezy pve
deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib

Proxmox 3.1 is now available

The new version of Proxmox Virtual Environment is now available for download. Proxmox is a free and powerful virtualization Linux distribution which enables us to power up multiple operating system on top of it. Proxmox is free and comes with a simple and easy to use web based administration console.

 

Installing Zentyal 3.0.2 on VirtualBox

Currently I am installing and testing the new release of Zentyal 3.0.2. I am installing Zentyal 3.0.2 on my Virtualbox. Zentyal is an Ubuntu based Linux distribution that is designed for server use. It has many features to power up and turn your old computer into a powerful server.

Zentyal features file server, gateway server, FTP server and many more. It easy to install and manage via web interface. Good to have Zentyal on our system. I will post many Zentyal tips and tutorial in the future.

How to install Skype on Debian 7 64 bit edition

This tutorial is going to show you how to install Skype on Debian 7 64 bit edition. Since Skype was designed for 32 bit, if we install it on a 64 bit Linux such as Debian 7 64 bit, we need to install some additional files which add support to i386 platform to the 64 bit system. There are few things we need to do before attemting to install Skype on Debian 7 64 bit. Skype for Debian is available in Multiarch format which means we need 32 bit libraries in order to run this app.

• Install 32 bit libraries. Open Terminal and login as root and then execute this command

dpkg --add-architecture i386

• Update and upgrade your system

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
