FreeNAS is a lightweight Linux distribution based on FreeBSD Linux that is good for a small server on your network (home or office). The size is pretty small (fit into USB disk) and its pretty easy to configure using built in web management console. This quick tutorial will show you how to install FreeNAS server.

1. Boot your server using FreeNAS CD. You can download and burn the FreeNAS ISO from this link

2. Highlight the first option (Install/Upgrade) from the installation menu. Use keyboard up and down arrow to select between options.

Configure NFS Server on FreeNAS 8.3.0

2. Go to Services and turn ON the NFS service from that page.

3. Now go to Sharing >> Unix(NFS)Share>>Add Unix (NFS) Share

 

Add new user and group to FreeNAS

In this post I want to show you how to add new user and new group to FreeNAS. FreeNAS is a simple and powerful file server appliance for your network. Before we publish our shares to the network, it is good to have group and users well set up on FreeNAS. Then we can restrict the shared folder for some user or group only and give no access for anyone not on the user list.

How to add user and group on FreeNAS

1. Login to FreeNAS web GUI. It usually can be done by typing the ip address of the FreeNAS server on a web browser like Google Chrome.

2. On the web administration page, click Groups > Add Group

3. Type the group name and press OK to confirm

 

How to change hard disk permission on FreeNAS

After adding new hard disk to FreeNAS, we may want to change some disk permission to the new hard disk. In FreeNAS, we can easily done this. This tutorial below will guide you how to change and modify permission to a hard disk on FreeNAS. We are using FreeNAS 8.0.4 on this tutorial.

2. Go to Storage tab and click change permission icon close to your disk. See picture below.
